Bracket of the best $5 wines – Part 2

2011 March 30
by Katy

At the beginning of March Madness, Chris and I began a tournament of cheap wines.  We did the white region over the ACC Tournament weekend and last weekend we did the red region while watching the NCAA Tournament.  Now that our Tar Heels have been eliminated, here are the winners among the reds.

The judges:

For those who missed the post on the best white wines under $5, the judges for the wine tournament are our faithful, basketball watching friends.  Everyone who came over for a game got a vote.  They’re not wine sommeliers, but they drink a lot of vino and they speak the truth!

The wines:

#1 Seed – Zarafa Pinotage 2009 – 14 percent alcohol, this smokey, earthy wine has enough fruit flavor to to balance it’s darker flavors.  It needs a little time to open up, but has a smooth taste and finish that make it easy to drink and easy to share with a group of people who may traditionally have very different tastes in wines.

#2 Seed – Trader Joe’s Coastal Zinfandel 2009 – 13.9 percent alcohol, this wine is very fruity with a slightly bitter aftertaste.  I’d say it had dominant plum flavors.

#3 Seed – Zafrika Pinotage 2010 – 14 percent alcohol, this wine is a little spicier and is more peppery than the others.  It also has more of a bright fruit flavor than the Zarafa

The winner:

#1 Seed, Zarafa, is the big winner out of the bunch.  It was a nice happy medium for a group of people divided among the other wines.  It is also my personal favorite.
